Hnefatafl board and starting position
Hnefatafl is an ancient board game, dating back at least to the Dark Ages, and with roots in earlier Greek and Roman games. It was played widely across North-Western Europe, wherever the Vikings lived and traded, and there were also Saxon and Celtic versions. It declined in popularity during the Middle Ages, when it was largely replaced by Chess, and almost vanished altogether. The board and starting position of Hnefatafl are known from archaeological and documentary evidence, but the rules are a matter of conjecture, however recent research and experimentation has resulted in a new interest in the game, with a very good set of rules and an annual World Championship.
